Itsukushima-jinja is famous for its 'floating' torii (the Shinto shrine gate), and is classified as one of Japan's "three best views'. As a consequence, it is one of the most photographed attractions in Japan. These photographs, however, require high tide, as otherwise the torii are surrounded not by water but by mud.
The shrine dates from the 6th century and in its present form from 1168.
Kamakura used to be the capital of Japan from 1185 to 1333. After Nikko, it is perhaps the best day trip out of Tokyo. There are a huge number of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines around the countryside. The most famous of these is the Daibutsu (Great Buddha) which is over 11m tall.
